Train the owner. Keep the results.
In-home dog training across Singapore from a former Police K9 handler. I train you to handle your dog — so the change sticks long after the sessions end.
If any of this is your week.
It's not your dog.
It's that nobody trained you.
Most owners do the things they're told — treats, classes, YouTube videos, the firm voice. They blame themselves when nothing sticks. The truth is simpler: most training is built around the dog. Real change starts when someone builds it around you.
A dog trained on food listens
when food is present.
A dog trained on respect
listens when it counts.
Former Narcotic Detector Dog handler with the Singapore Police K9 Unit. Methods proven on the toughest dogs — adapted for your home.
My uncle trained Police K9s in Singapore for over four decades. The same principles, passed down.
Not a classroom. Not a group. Your flat, your corridor, your lift — where your dog actually needs to behave.
How I work.
Three ideas that change how your dog listens. And how you lead.
No treats. Real communication.
Treat trainers teach dogs to work for food. I teach dogs to work with you. A dog trained on respect doesn't need a biscuit to behave in public — because they already trust who's holding the lead.
Train the owner.
You live with your dog. I train you for four sessions. By the end, you are the trainer. The skills stay with you for your dog's whole life. No ongoing lessons required.
K9 grounded. Home tested.
The principles that keep a police dog focused under pressure also keep your dog calm when another dog walks past. The methods work because they respect how dogs actually think.
Before pet dogs, I trained Police K9s.
I handled Narcotic Detector Dogs with the Singapore Police K9 Unit. My uncle trained Police K9s for over forty years — he's the reason I got into this.
Police dogs don't work for treats. They work for the relationship. When I started training family dogs, I realised what makes a good police dog is exactly what makes a good family dog: clear communication, leadership the dog can trust, respect in both directions.
That's all I teach. Owners, not dogs.
“Training starts with trust.
Everything else follows.”
What clients say on Google.
Dog Papa is experienced in handling dogs and uses praises instead of treats to train dogs. He is also passionate about what he does and takes the time to understand what exactly the dog needs and how we can help as owners to achieve the results we want to see. Highly recommend!
Shawn at Dog Papa is extremely knowledgeable and great with dogs. He has a strong understanding of dog training, behaviour, health, and diet, and it is clear he genuinely cares about getting the best results for both the dog and owner. Professional, dedicated, and very experienced — I would highly recommend Dog Papa to anyone looking for quality dog training.
We are currently training with Shawn and he is very patient and dedicated. We're grateful to be learning from him — he has been in this industry for long and is very knowledgeable. He takes the time to teach us about many aspects of caring for a dog and not just basic training. My bond with my dog is much better and I believe it will get even better with his guidance.
Dog Papa did magic with a couple of my friends' dogs including two of mine (one of which had anxiety issues). A trainer who is safe, knowledgeable and instinctive — given that each dog is different and has special requirements, he has the aptitude to dial in and tailor each course specifically to the dog. Some trainers tend to rush the sessions, which made me and my dog even more anxious, but never so with Dog Papa. Proud to be part of the pack!
Shawn was very quick and efficient to address our problem and taught some methods to practise and follow up. We have been doing it and seen good improvement. He also has been promptly following up and asking for videos in order to check in and see the progress. Would definitely recommend!
Three ways to work together.
Every programme is delivered in your home, one to one. I come to you — your flat, your corridor, your dog's actual world.
An assessment and targeted work on one specific issue. A low-commitment way to see how I work with you.
Build the foundations before bad habits form. Four sessions across socialisation, lead work, and real-world readiness.
Fix the issue. Make it stick. Add advanced skills. Four sessions for adult dogs with a specific problem or owners who want the full transformation.
The same gear I use
in every session.
Handmade leather, training chains, long lines — the kit I use in every session. Chosen because it works, not because it photographs well.

The honest answers to the questions people ask most often.
Do you train with treats?
No. The DOGPAPA Method is built on respect and clear communication — not food rewards. Treat-based training works while food is present. The moment the treats run out, or something more interesting comes along, the dog stops listening. I teach your dog to listen because they trust you, not because you're holding a snack.
Where do sessions take place?
In your home. Dog Papa offers in-home, 1-on-1 training across Singapore — HDB flats, condos, and landed properties. Sessions happen in the environment your dog actually lives in: your corridor, your void deck, your park, your lift. This is where real training has to happen.
How much do you charge?
A single in-home consultation is S$250. The Baby Puppy Class (4 sessions for dogs under 6 months) is S$720. The Adult Class (4 sessions for dogs 6 months and older) is S$880. Packages offer meaningful savings over single sessions and give you the full transformation, not just a one-off fix.
What problems do you work on?
Leash pulling, reactivity to other dogs, barking, jumping on guests, door manners, recall, impulse control, puppy foundations, and HDB-specific challenges including corridor behaviour, lift training, and void deck distractions.
My dog is bad in the lift. Can you fix that?
Yes — this is one of the most common HDB issues I work on. Lift behaviour is a training problem with a clear approach. I work it in your actual lift, with your actual dog, on the routes you walk every day. Many owners see meaningful change in the first few sessions.
I've tried treats, classes, and YouTube. Why would this work?
Because I don't train the dog. I train you. Treats teach a dog to listen when food is present. Group classes teach a dog to behave in a classroom. YouTube teaches you a fragment of a method without context. I come to your home, with your dog, and show you the full method in your real environment. The skills stay with you for your dog's whole life.
Will this work for a reactive dog?
Yes. Reactivity is one of the issues I work on most. In my experience, reactivity often comes from anxiety — a dog who doesn't yet trust their owner to handle the situation. Once you become the calm, clear leader, that anxiety usually softens. Every dog is different, but many respond well to the right approach.
Who is Shawn?
Shawn is a former handler with the Singapore Police K9 Unit, where he handled Narcotic Detector Dogs. He trained under his uncle, who taught Singapore Police K9 handlers for over 40 years. DOGPAPA brings those principles into family homes across Singapore.
